Political Unrest Around the World

Political unrest occurs when citizens take to the streets to express their dissatisfaction with their government. This can range from peaceful protests to violent confrontations. It can also result in economic disruptions or social instability.

Political tensions are on the rise globally as rising economic anxieties converge with global conflicts and domestic problems. These tensions are fueling a renaissance of identity-based politics along racial and ideological lines. In the United States, it is leading to a resurgence of white nationalist groups. In Uganda, the 2020 protests over higher fuel prices, food and housing costs, high unemployment rates especially among youth, double digit inflation and poor urban social service delivery drove the protests (New Vision, 2021).

Economic problems are typically at the core of political unrest. The rising cost of living, high levels of inflation and inequality in income distribution can make citizens feel like their government is failing them. Inequality and dissatisfaction with the economy can trigger widespread, sometimes violent, demonstrations such as those that took place in Lebanon and Chile in late 2020.

Movements advocating for racial and social justice often have peaceful aims, but they can still be significant focal points of political unrest. They highlight long-standing injustices and inequalities that can lead to a loss of faith in government institutions.

During periods of political unrest, travelers should stay informed and avoid areas where crowds are gathering. They should follow local news and be aware that demonstrations can quickly escalate into violence.
